Albergo Diffuso

Over the past couple of years, you may have read a story or two about Italy or Spain’s ghost cities. The ghost cities are villages that over time have deteriorated due to poverty, lack of employment or even earthquakes. In an effort to keep these towns sustainable, local governments, such as they are, began offering up property for sale at €1 if there is a further €15,000 invested over the next 3 years. it has been very well received but only time will tell if this ploy is successful.

Another method that has gained traction is when the local inhabitants turn the entire town into a hotel (albergo diffuso). It’s a fascinating story that has met with some success.

Here are two links to different towns that may make you rethink your next holiday to Italy.
